'State of M.' at Kunstmuseum Magdeburg: on view until June 12!

"With his project 'State of M.' that turns towards modernism and Bauhaus architecture, photographer Joachim Brohm points with his camera into history. The letter “M” in the title alludes to modernism, to Magdeburg and to the name Mies, referring to a villa that was planned by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for Magdeburg but has never been realized.

Brohm’s view strives for a connection to the past without denying the temporal distance. Within his photographic evaluation of selected buildings worldwide he seeks to track down the modern impulse and to capture it in his photographs. Conceptually, he encounters the myth of modernism that has been persisting for decades with the means of his own generation, with the photography and the architecture of the Bauhaus provoking as much as accompanying his camera’s gaze. The groundbreaking innovations, especially for the development of photography and particularly by the Bauhaus, become a foil for the discussion of the same medium." Out Now! Joachim Brohm, Valentina Seidel: Trinity

Trinity. A new church in Leipzig: St Trinitatis by Schulz und Schulz architects. Photographs 2015-2012.

The consecration of a new church in May 2015 was the end of an odyssey for a Leipzig parish community that has lasted for over seventy years. With the construction of the new building by Schulz und Schulz architects, St Trinitatis has returned to the center of the city: prominently situated right across from the monumental town-hall built in 1905. The body of work comprises 120 photographs following the continuous changes at the construction-site.

The evolving new architecture also provides the backdrop for selections of portraits: teenagers celebrating their holy confirmation, workmen of multinational origin as well as the artists that were commissioned to develop works for the building. By integrating additional sequences of photographs from their artistic projects into the flow of images, Joachim Brohm and Valentina Seidel develop an unexpected and complex visual narrative, leading viewers beyond the boundaries of the documentary style.

Solo Show "Mies Model Study" at Gallery Luisotti, Los Angeles

September 17 – November 14, 2015. Gallery Luisotti, Los Angeles.
A new selection of works for the first time on show in the US:

"More than 80 years after designs for the Krefeld Golf Club were abandoned due to the Great Depression, Belgian architect Paul Robbrecht set about to realize the unfinished project. In 2013, a 1:1 scale model of Mies van der Rohe's original design was realized on the outskirts of Krefeld, a location Mies had selected. Built from unfinished drawings and unrefined plans, the space was rough and incomplete. The temporary space provided rare insight into what could have been – a notion that intrigued photographer Joachim Brohm, and is emphasized by his photographs which draw on the style of the original Modernist photographers, using a mixture of color and black and white images which incorporate diagonal lines and emphasize the open, flowing spaces of the Mies design. Brohm has an extensive background in architectural photography. His portfolio of architectural eccentricities delves into the details of design anomalies, drawing attention to uncommon elements of building design. Brohm was given the opportunity to photograph the life-size Mies model, producing a series of photographs that examine the basic geometry of architectural design, with an emphasis on the unfinished elements of the building." Thompson, published in 2003. The book is a collection of writings about Thompson's past that focuses on the theme of rebellion against authority.
